# Publish apps

> Publish a supported static folder, review its public URL, and update or unpublish it.

**Publish app** turns a supported static application folder in WS Files into an immutable public release. Use it for an HTML-based output you intend other people to view.

A running development server or live preview is not automatically a published app.

## Prepare the folder

Place the publishable HTML and its assets in the intended source folder. The folder must have **index.html** at its root. The publishing workflow validates the source and rejects protected content such as secrets and unsupported symlinks.

Choose a public output folder rather than a private project root containing credentials or unrelated working files. A server-side application needs its own supported hosting workflow; static publishing does not deploy its backend.

## Publish

1. Open the source folder's offered **Publish app** action in Files.
2. Review **Source folder**, **Public slug**, and **App ID**.
3. Use a valid app ID with lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens.
4. Confirm publication.
5. Wait for the result and open the returned public URL.
6. Check the visible content and linked assets as a visitor.

Publication requires the permitted Apps write capability and a supported workspace target. An authorization or validation error should be resolved before trying again.

## Update a release

Use **Publish app update** for the existing app. Review the source before replacing the published version. The update can retain the public URL while creating a new immutable release.

Edits to the working folder do not change the published release until you publish an update.

## Unpublish

Use **Unpublish** from the app's publishing controls when the public app should no longer be served. Confirm the intended app. This is separate from deleting the working source folder.

## Preview, test, and publish

Use [Live Preview](/user-guide/preview-review) for iteration and review, Browser Test for requested interaction evidence, and Publish app for public delivery. Verify the actual public URL after publishing; a successful local preview cannot verify the public release.
